  Estate's description

Château Latour
« The best Bordeaux in the bad years »… Constant, regular, in good as in poor years…
The history of the area probably dates back to the fourteenth century. ‘Latour de Saint Maubert’ was actually built during this century. The tower was a strategic place, during the 100-year-war, as it dominates the Gironde estuary. Unfortunately, the tower does not exist anymore, and the current tour is no longer the same. During the seventeenth century, the family Ségur became the owner of château Latour. At that time, this family owned numerous estates in the region. In the eighteenth century, Latour acquired an international reputation, particularly thanks to the development of the English market. Then the château’s reputation increased constantly, and finally become one of the best. A proof of this is the recognition as a ‘premier grand cru classé’ at the 1855’s classification. The nineteenth century was a prosperous period for the castle. This period has seen, as well, the construction of the castle as it is today. In 1963, the descendants of the Marquis de Ségur sold 75% of their shares. It follows then many changes: extension of the vineyard (birth of the second wine of château Latour), improvement of the drainage’s system, modernization and extension of the winery… Located in the famous Medoc’s area, specifically in the city of Pauillac, the vineyard of the château has 78 hectares, of which only 47, called ‘L’Enclos’, are dedicated to the production of the great wine. This soil, unique in its kind, lies at 300 meters from the Gironde. Indeed, to produce a great wine in this region, you must "have a view on the river”. Its vines are also characteristic of the Medoc’s appellation: cabernet sauvignon (80%), merlot (18%), cabernet franc and petit verdot (2%). The most typical wine of the Medoc’s region: fine mix of tannins and red fruit …
